Vegetarian Diet

There are a number of different vegetarian diets, and the food you can eat depends on the type of vegetarian diet you follow.

Generally, a vegetarian diet will mean you do not eat meat, fish, poultry or shellfish, although some people do include fish in their diet. You may choose to only eat eggs if they are free-range, if your diet allows for the consumption of eggs.

It is recommended to speak to a nutritionist or your doctor before starting a diet, to ensure you will eat healthy meals, especially if you are pregnant or have a medical condition.

Some of the most common varieties of vegetarian diets are:

Ovo-vegetarian diets

You are not allowed to eat meat, fish, poultry, shellfish or dairy products. You can eat eggs, however. “Ovo” comes from the Latin word for egg.

A balanced ovo-vegetarian diet will combine foods from a range of different food groups. Fruit, vegetables, juices, cereals, bread, beans, rice, nuts and soy milk are all options that you can have along with eggs.

Lacto-vegetarian diets

You are not allowed to eat meat, fish, poultry, shellfish or eggs. You can eat dairy products, however. “Lacto” comes from the Latin word for milk.

A balanced lacto-vegetarian diet will combine foods from a range of different food groups. Fruit, vegetables, juices, cereals, bread, beans, rice and nuts are all options that you can have along with dairy products.

Vegan diets

You are not allowed to eat meat, fish, poultry, shellfish, eggs, dairy products, or anything else that is a by-product of animals. You can eat plant-derived foods, and have soya drinks.

A balanced vegan diet will combine foods from a range of different food groups. Fruit, vegetables, cereals, bread, beans, rice nuts and soy milk are all options for those following a vegan diet. Flaxseed oil and rapeseed oil can also help provide you with omega-3 fatty acids, replacing oily fish.
